"First Days of Spring," oil on panel by the Liège painter Modeste-Jean Lhomme. He completed his entire schooling at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Liège and was trained in painting by the masters Adrien de Witte, Évariste Carpentier, and Auguste Donnay. He initially focused on decorative painting and then primarily on landscape painting. An admirer of Auguste Renoir, he set up his easel in the Lower Meuse region and later in the Ardennes, where he lived for a time. He mainly depicted views of the valleys of the Lesse, the Aisne, and the Semois rivers, both Belgian and French.
An early draft of the painting is found on the back of the work. There are some missing pieces in the frame.
