Oil on canvas mounted on panel. Robert Aerens, born in 1883 in Ghent and died in 1969, is a Belgian painter of landscapes, portraits, still lifes and an aquafortist. Painter of landscapes, portraits and still lifes, etcher. A student of J. Delvin at the Ghent Academy where he taught from 1924. Residing in Afsnee from 1902, he joined the second expressionist group of Laethem, in particular with Frits Van den Berghe. He travels to France, Switzerland and Italy. A luminary around 1910, his craftsmanship then settled into a realism with soberly constructed forms. After his travels, he became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent.
