A magnificent work by Jean-Baptiste Scoriel depicting a scene on the banks of the Sambre, probably in Namur near Grognon.
A painter and landscape artist, he mainly painted in oils, but also produced watercolours. He worked alongside the artists Pierre Paulus de Chatelet (painter) and Victor Demanet (sculptor). He was also an outstanding teacher who trained a large number of future artists. Scoriel used simple means to create vast landscapes. His colours are bold and his effects very luminous. He himself painted his studies directly on small panels, in nature, which he reproduced on larger canvases in his studio.
