Very nice painting on wood by David Ortlieb, signed and dated 1860, depicting a landscape with water and birds in flight, in its frame.
Dimensions : 20.5x 32.5 cm.
David Ortlieb was born in Colmar on May 6, 1797, the son of Johan Jacob Ortlieb, a winegrower and innkeeper from Beblenheim, and Anne-Marie Erhard, a native of Ostheim. David Ortlieb, who lived all his life at 4 rue des clefs in Colmar, expressed himself in his hometown in the following termsexpressed himself in his hometown as part of a group of artists bearing the names Lebert, Hertrich and Rothmuller who attended the famous Karpff school in Rossbach, known as the "Colmar school". Between Romanticism and Impressionism, he skilfully produced small- and medium-format drawings, watercolors, oils and sepia. The painter exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1842, 1843 and 1844. These works provide irreplaceable evidence of what the Colmar region was like in the 19th century. Many of his works are in the Musée d'Unterlinden in Colmar.
David Ortlieb died in Colmar on December 8, 1875 at the age of 78.
