Frantz Charlet is one of the finest exponents of Belgian Orientalism; he was a close friend of Théo van Rysselberghe, and with him and James Ensor, under the guidance of Octave Maus, created the XX. This painting, signed (lower left) F. Charlet, is located in Algiers. It shows a lovely North African desert landscape, with “horsemen“ on donkeys or mules. The choice of tones and the play of shadows give an impression of the overwhelming heat of the desert. An amusing detail, extremely well executed by the artist, is that the rider on the right is smoking.
