Like his great-uncle, the painter Alexander Macco, Georg Macco wanted to pursue a career in art. Between 1880 and 1887, he studied at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts with Eugen Dücker and Peter Janssen, and did illustrations for Die Gartenlaube and the books of his brother Hermann Friedrich Macco (de). He settled in Munich and travelled extensively, drawing inspiration from his travels. He painted landscapes of the high Alps, Norway and Spitzbergen, and Italy. A pioneer of orientalism, Macco depicted his travels in Athens, Constantinople, Baalbek, Jerusalem, Cairo and Mecca.

Georg Macco exhibited his works at the Museum Kunstpalast, the Suermondt-Ludwig Museum, the Rudolfinum and the Alpine Museum in Munich.

Macco's paintings are mainly gouaches and oil paintings, sometimes watercolours. His work is characterised by a style close to expressionism, a masterly display of colour and light effects and a strong sense of detail.
