Jean Van Cleemput was a Belgian artist, born and died in Brussels (1881-1953). He was a painter, draftsman and graphic designer. He was Jean Brusselmans' brother-in-law. He studied at the Brussels Academy under the direction of C. Montald. From 1898, he continued his studies in Paris. He also worked there as a restorer for the Louvre. Among other things, he has realised landscapes, urban and marine landscapes and interior scenes. He managed to give his realistic drawing an impressionist elegance, so that some of his works are close to the style of F. Smeers. He then gradually moves towards Fauvist synthesis and approaches at a certain point Brusselmans' design. He exhibited for the first time at the Brussels Triennale in 1898. With A. Bastien, he organises the first exhibition at the Rood Klooster in Auderghem. He participated in the "Humians Exhibition" in London. His work can be found, among other things, at the Cabinet of Stamps in Brussels and various faces of Grimberg (ca. 1925) in the collection of the municipality of Grimbergen. It is mentioned in BAS I and Two centuries of signatures by Belgian artists. (piron
