Jeanne Portenart was born in Brabant in 1911. She graduated from the Brussels and Etterbeek Academies of Fine Arts. She died in 1991.
She did not belong to any particular school, but was certainly closer to abstraction than figuration. Her work pursues unknown forms and figures. For her exhibitions in Vresse, she likes to present small, more figurative works, at the request of José Chaidron, who feels that there are no enthusiasts in the Ardennes for her abstract works. For her, painting is "a way of being, of listening, of seeing the harmony and disharmony between beings and things", and also an art of living. Light plays an important role in her work, and she says that "beyond painting, light is a visible manifestation of truth". Her work is imbued with philosophy and reflection.
Jeanne Portenart is best known for her small "holiday homework" paintings, done in oils and painted during her travels abroad and in the Ardennes. She exhibits every two years at La Glycine.
