Félicien Rops (Namur (Belgium) 1833-1898 Essones (France)) was a polymorphous Belgian artist (painter, draftsman, engraver, illustrator) attached to the symbolist movement. Known for his shocking work, he illustrated authors like Baudelaire and explored themes such as death, sexuality and the occult, while criticizing the bourgeoisie. After illustrating newspapers, he moved to Paris, became friends with Baudelaire, and devoted himself to illustrating literary works. He died in Essonnes in 1898, where he had established his property La Demi-Lune, and devoted himself to botany.
