Félicien Rops (Namur, Belgium, 1833–1898 Essonnes, France) was a multifaceted Belgian artist (painter, draftsman, engraver, illustrator) associated with the Symbolist movement. Known for his provocative work, he illustrated authors such as Baudelaire and explored themes like death, sexuality, and the occult, while also criticizing the bourgeoisie. After illustrating newspapers, he settled in Paris, became friends with Baudelaire, and devoted himself to illustrating literary works. He died in Essonnes in 1898, where he had established his estate, La Demi-Lune, and dedicated himself to botany.
