Successively realistic, impressionist, pointillist, colorist, luminist, and even considered by some to be part of the brabançon beasts, Fernand Verhaegen was therefore tempted by different techniques. Painter of landscapes, portraits, flowers, still lifes and sports scenes, it was especially in the illustration of scenes from the folklore of Wallonia that he demonstrated his great talent. The Gilles de Binche, the Doudou de Mons, the giants of Ath, the Chinels de Fosses, the Pasquîyes, the Tchaudia, the Madeleine de Jumet, the marches of the Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse, to name a few, are among the representations of this Walloon folklore that have taken shape under its magic brush. He was very early described as the painter of the Gilles de Binche. In 1920 en 1922 was hij aanwezig op de Biënnale van Venetië.
