Remarkable and iconic TOIO Floor Lamp / Uplighter created in 1962 by the Castiglioni brothers, Achille and Pier Giacomo. Rare and authentic piece, in superb condition. Works perfectly. The Castiglioni brothers are universally recognized for being immense and talented innovators in the field of contemporary lighting. Here is the idea that a car headlight can serve as a light source leading to one of the most famous ready-mades of the lighting industry of the 20th century. Note also the main upright in the shape of a fishing rod, a theme that will be taken up 20 years later (1980) by Ron Arad with his famous 'Aerial Light' luminaire. The absence of any protection makes their aesthetics of anonymous components fully valid and expressive. Like many other Castiglioni projects, this floor lamp combines functionalism, irony and a great sensitivity to the spirit of the times. Achille Castiglioni studied architecture at the Polytechnic in Milan and graduated in 1944. He joined his two brothers Livio (1911-1979) and Pier Giacomo (1913-1968) in their design studio in Milan. As for some of their young fellow architects (Ettore Sottsass or Marco Zanuso), the lack of architectural projects led the Castiglioni brothers to develop design projects for Italian manufacturers wishing to relaunch their activity after the war. Livio left the family studio in 1952. During the 1950s and 1960s, the Achille brothers and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni created a large number of objects for industrialists such as Flos or Zanotta.
