The painting depicts a redhead with a long neck, wearing her hat and tulle, arranging her blue gloves, Parisian and elegant.
Unsigned work, attributed to Jean-Gabriel Domergue, according to a certificate signed by a Liège antique dealer, dated 2005 and corroborated by Mr. Noé Willer (expert on the painter). This pastel is included in the painter's archives. On the back of the pastel is written in pencil "formerly in the Marcel Graindorge collection" (who belonged to the family of the wealthy art collector Fernand Graindorge).
Framed dimensions: 75 x 62 cm
Jean-Gabriel Domergue (March 4, 1889 – November 16, 1962)
Born in Bordeaux, Domergue studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. At the age of seventeen, he exhibited his works at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1906. In 1913, he won the second Prix de Rome and the Gold Medal at the 1920 edition. He then began exhibiting outside the Salon. After painting landscapes, from the 1920s onward, he devoted himself to portraiture. He became the painter of the "Parisian woman." He invented a new type of woman: slender, ethereal, elegant, with a swan-like neck and large, seductive eyes that contemplate the world with longing. He produced approximately 3,000 portraits. He also designed clothing for the couturier Paul Poiret. From 1955 to 1962, he was curator of the Jacquemart-André Museum. Domergue was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor. He died on November 16, 1962 in Paris.
