Roger BOTEMBE was born on 4 March 1959 in Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He is a painter who graduated from the Académie Royale des Beaux-arts de Belgique in 1986 and is very well-known in Congo and Belgium. His work is characterised by bright colours and motifs inspired by the traditions and culture of his country.
He began his career by setting up his own studio and a Congolese school of contemporary African art. He has exhibited widely in his own country, but also abroad, particularly in South Africa, Belgium, Monaco and Poland. The quality of his work earned him the Prix d'Excellence from the City of Brussels and the Gold Medal from the Belgian Government in 1986, as well as the Prix Charles Buls from the City of Brussels, the Prize from the Embassy of Paraguay, and the Prize from the Museum of Contemporary Art in Louvain la Neuve (Belgium).
In 1981-1982 he worked in Samir Zarour's studio in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, at the Institut National des Arts d'Abidjan, and obtained a 2nd degree diploma in monumental painting from the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels.Since 1990, he has held the position of Head of Works at the Academy of Fine Arts in his home country, and since 2006, that of Director of International Cooperation and Promotion at the Institute of National Museums.
In 1992, he founded the ‘Ateliers Botembe', a Congolese school of contemporary African art. Associate professor and head of the Plastic Arts section at the Kinshasa Academy of Fine Arts and director of International Cooperation and Promotion at the Institut des Musées Nationaux du Congo since 2006, he was the founder in 1999 of trans-symbolism, a Renaissance movement in contemporary African art.
