Karel OOMS.
Born in Dessel on January 27, 1845, died in Cannes on March 18, 1900. He specialized in genre and history scenes, and was renowned for the quality of his portraits. His great sensitivity is particularly evident in his orientalist works (genre scenes and landscapes).
Born into a farming family, his extraordinary talent for drawing was discovered at school at the age of 12. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp with Professor Nicaise de Keyser, thanks to the financial support of his hometown (which gave him two altarpieces for the church of Saint Nicolas in gratitude).
Settled in Antwerp, Karel Ooms won prizes for his works in Prague (1877), Amsterdam (1883), Adelaide (1887), Melbourne (1888) and Chicago (1893). He traveled throughout Europe and the Middle East. His many trips to Palestine and Egypt are documented by the numerous paintings he produced there.
