Charles-Louis La Salle is a painter, sculptor and poet born in Hanoi, Vietnam, in 1938. French painter, poet and sculptor Charles-Louis La Salle was born in Hanoi on August 17, 1938. He spent his childhood in Indochina and his adolescence in Africa. Back in France, he developed an addictive passion for art and poetry. After graduating from the Arts Déco in Paris, he began traveling throughout Europe. He settled in Provence in 1966, making Toulon his first port of call. It was in his Toulon studio that he was discovered by Louis Aragon, who described him as his third aesthetic shock after Picasso and Matisse. Close to Dali, Cesar and Gruau, he combines Romantic, Baroque and Surrealist influences, all of which he expresses in his own original way. He created several sculptures in bronze and resin in the Brutalist style, bringing in influences from mythology and ancient Greece, such as the Minautore, the Lion of Nemée, Victory... Thanks to several seminal exhibitions, including one at Marseille's Vieille Charité under the auspices of Louis Aragon and Edmonde Charles-Roux, he made a name for himself. Influenced by the masters of the Italian Renaissance, he also took an interest in Burgundian statuary, the pictorial techniques of Roguer Van der Weyden's rendering of broken folds and the light rendering techniques of the Flemish Primitives. In 1987, the cover of the historic issue Un of his magazine Art Sud was dedicated to him. A tribute exhibition was held in the library of the Centre Georges Pompidou. He was awarded the Prix de l'Académie de Marseille and the Fondation Jules Verne. He is also awarded the Monte Carlo Contemporary Art Prize. A polymorphous creator, he is also involved in theater and opera, creating sets, costumes and stagings.
