Large historical ceremonial flag - Confrérie Royale de l'Arbalète Saint Sébastien - Tongres (Belgium).
Dimensions: 170 cm wide x 190 cm high.
Presumed date of manufacture: 1881 (founding date 1726).
Origin: former archery brotherhood of Tongeren, Belgium's oldest city.
This magnificent embroidered fabric flag is an exceptional example of Belgium's 19th-century folklore and associative heritage. It features a sumptuous decoration with :
The official coat of arms of the city of Tongeren, surmounted by a crowned black swan.
An embroidered floral garland, gilded border with period bangs and trimmings.
The inscription “Koninklyke Handboog Maatschappij Sint Sebastiaan - Tongeren“ in embroidered letters.
A composition of five arrows linked at the bottom, the traditional emblem of archery companies (crossbow).
The flag features a richly worked front, while the reverse is a deep solid red.
General condition: well preserved for its age, moderate wear to edges. Ideal for collectors, museums or historical re-enactors.
Provenance: legally acquired at a flea market in Flanders several years ago. Provenance statement available.
