Ink on paper by the artist Kurt Lewy, one of the emblematic figures of geometric abstraction in Belgium.
Kurt Lewy was born in Essen, Germany. He became an artist, but being Jewish, he was dismissed from his position by the Nazi regime. He sought refuge in Brussels, Belgium. He was imprisoned in France in May 1940, in the closed camps of Saint-Cyprien and Gurs, by the Belgian authorities. In 1942, he managed to escape and returned to Brussels. With the Second World War behind him, he abandoned German Expressionism and turned instead to Abstraction. He became a naturalized Belgian citizen in 1951.
