The great earthenware factories of Lorraine - Sarreguemines, Lunéville, St-Clément, Pexonne and others - enjoyed extraordinary success with the industrial boom of the 19th century. On the other hand, the output of a number of workshops where equally talented painters practised their art at home was more modest. This was the case, for example, of the Rovina family, originally from the kingdom of Piedmont, who emigrated to France in the middle of the 19th century to settle in àpinal in the Vosges. Purchasing biscuits mainly from the various earthenware factories in the east of France, several generations of artists from this family have left a legacy of remarkable pieces that are highly sought-after by many collectors today. ... Founded in 1860 by Apolline Rovina, the company moved to the city of images in 1910. It had a workshop where real artists worked, on rue Thiers, and a shop on place des Vosges. Crockery sets, vases, decorative pieces and made-to-order pieces: Rovina bought blank pieces, or biscuits in the jargon, from Lunéville or Limoges, then decorated them with taste and finesse. Along with Empire-style pieces, daisies and pine cones are still emblematic motifs of this company, which switched from earthenware to porcelain around 1912. In the 1950s, Rovina ran out of steam and closed in 1984. But Rovina remains in the hearts of Spinaliens and Vosgiens.
