"Original Counterpoise Desk Lamp - England, Circa 1950/55 - Restored".
This is a different model from the other one, which is also listed. Polished aluminum and re-chromed parts. Rewired and grounded.
The Counterpoise lamp is a balanced-arm lamp designed in the late 1940s by the British engineer and businessman Sidney Adolph Horstmann (7 July 1881 – 11 July 1962). In 1904, Horstmann and his brothers founded Horstmann Gear to produce a variable-speed gearbox he had invented for cars and motorcycles. The company later became a general engineering firm, specializing in gas street lighting controls, time switches, gauges, and, more recently, central heating controls. In 1913, Horstmann founded a car company, Horstmann Cars, which was later renamed Horstman Cars. Car production ceased in 1929, by which time between 1,500 and 3,000 cars had been manufactured. After World War II, Horstmann formed a new electrical engineering company with GCT Hadrill, named Hadrill and Horstmann Ltd. They were best known for the counterweight lamps they produced, which are now collector's items. The company was acquired in 1955 by the Simms Group, which also acquired Horstmann Ltd. Hadrill and Horstmann Ltd. filed a patent application, number 617,550, for a design using the mechanism on May 24, 1950, and manufactured the lamp in their own workshops in London and Godalming, Surrey. We restore these lamps to a very high standard in our own workshops in London and Germany. All lights are rewired with new, old-style textile cable. For safety reasons, we use only new bulb holders with an earth screw. We use only spare parts from old, unusable lamps. Worldwide shipping - Customs and duties fees are the responsibility of the buyer.
