Charles Hollis Jones (born 1945) is an American artist and furniture designer. He is known for his use of acrylic and lucite.
At the age of 16, he moved to Los Angeles and founded CHJ Designs. At the time, acrylic, lucite, plexiglass, polycarbonate, perpex and plastic were not commonly used as materials for high-end furniture and art, so Jones began creating pieces for showrooms such as Hudson-Rissman. Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball and Johnny Carson were among the first to ask Jones to create pieces for their homes. Tennessee Williams asked Jones to design a writing chair, the Wisteria Chair.
In the 1970s, Jones created his ‘Edison' lamp, which won a prize at the California Design Competition.
His work is on display at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena and the Los Angeles Times called him ‘a pioneer of acrylic design'. Jones lives in the Burbank area of Los Angeles and continues to design furniture and accessories. He has received a number of awards, including the Golden Heart Award sculpture in 2008...
Other artist-designers such as Romeo Rega, Alessandro Albrizzi and Gabriella Crespi have also worked with these materials in a qualitative way.
