*Max Sauze (Algiers, 1933): Franco-Algerian metal craftsman. He studied at the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Algiers (1953-1956) and at the Ecole Camondo in Paris (1956-1959). Shortly afterwards, he began producing his own designs in a small workshop in Algiers. In 1963, he moved to Eguilles, near Aix-en-Provence.
In 1968, Max Sauze founded his own aluminum-working company, where he created dynamic, sculptural lighting fixtures. His designs are often made from layers of aluminum woven and bent over wire structures. This production process stems from his spiritual outlook and taste for the natural essence of life.
Max Sauze's most famous designs are named after constellations or holy bodies, such as the Cassiopeia Chandelier (ca. 1969). Notable designs include the Orion Chandelier (ca. 1967) presented at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs, the Uranus Table Lamp (ca. 1970) and the Isocele Nesting Tables (1970s).
Max Sauze's work is highly varied: sculptures, gardens, ceramics, lighting, architecture and books. It is representative of the craft renaissance of the 1960s and 1970s. He is often considered a precursor of post-modernism. His son, Sébastien Sauze, has taken over the running of the family business, producing his father's designs by hand.
