Centaur skeletons are typical of the curiosity cabinets of the late 19th century. Like unicorn horns, these objects belong to ‘cryptozoology', a term later coined by the Scottish biologist Ivan T. Sanderson in the first half of the 20th century. An example of a centaur is kept at the Barnum Museum in Bridgeport, created by the famous entrepreneur and freak show director Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810-1891). This model of a centaur skeleton is made up of imitation elements including the bust of a man mounted on a mass of mule skeleton, the circulatory system figured in red and dark blue wax. Size: 138 x 113 x 33 cm. On a moulded blackened wood base.
