Roger Capron studied art at the Ecole des Arts Appliqués in Paris under decorator René Gabriel. After various attempts at theatrical decor and advertising poster design, in 1946 he left the capital for the pottery village of Vallauris.
At first, he taught drawing, while at the same time learning ceramics in various workshops. Together with his schoolmate Robert Picault (1919-2000), they set up the Callis studio, with Jean Derval (1925-2010) completing the trio. The workshop remained in operation until the end of 1949, when Robert Picault left to buy the Fournas factory. In 1952, Roger Capron bought a disused pottery to embark on his own industrial adventure, employing a number of turners like Baba and decorators like Gabrielle Mackiewicz. By 1957, over 40 people were casting and glazing the pieces, and the company's products were exhibited at ceramics trade fairs such as the Salon des Ateliers d'Art de Paris, the Salon du Meuble and the Salon Batimat.
However, in 1946, Roger Capron and Robert Picault organized the first potters' exhibition at Le Nérolium, enabling Vallauris ceramists to sell their wares to tourists and to make themselves known to gallery owners in Paris and abroad.
