JEAN CHARLES ( stamped ) for MAISON CHARLES, pair of side brass tables, 1960s

Rare pair of coffee tables or sofa ends signed by Jean Charles (major of the BOULLE school in the interior design section) for Maison Charles in Paris, in the Hollywood Regency & Glamour Chic style of the 1960s. Square chromed steel structures, crimped and removable gilded brass frames, smoked glass. Perfect condition, completely dismantled and refurbished (see last photo). Note a slight, almost invisible, shard of glass under one of the lower shelves... (see photo). Biography: Ernest CHARLES takes over ULLMANN, Bronzier. The company, based in Paris, specialised in the reproduction of antique lighting fixtures, thereby forging a reputation within the bronze art profession. In 1920, Emile Albert CHARLES, his eldest son, took over the business, and in 1932, Emile CHARLES went into partnership with his brother Pierre. The company changed its name to Charles Frères in 1933. In 1959, Emile CHARLES was joined by his 2 sons: Jean CHARLES, who had graduated from the BOULLE school with a major in interior architecture and woodcarving, and Jacques CHARLES, who had a diploma in interior architecture from the Arts Appliqués. Together they created the CHARLES Style, combining classicism, rigour and modernity; a new approach to lighting and decoration. In 1960, they took over FARGETTE. Assisted by Jean's wife, Chrystiane CHARLES, the family created a new style in lighting and decoration: the famous Pineapple, Corn, Pinecone, Lotus lamps... Today, the Maison Charles continues to innovate and collaborate with numerous artists such as FÉLIX AGOSTINI, JEAN BOGGIO, PHILIPPE PARENT, OLIVIA PUTMAN, MICHAEL WAGNER, RAPHAËL NAVOT, PIERRE-YVES ROCHON, JEAN-MANUEL FREITAS....
