“Japanese Kusuri Dansu - Apothecary chest with Yosegi inlay &Raden inlays “
Rare and elegant Japanese Kusuri Dansu (???) - small apothecary cabinet traditionally used to store medicinal herbs, remedies or precious objects. This compact model perfectly illustrates the refined craftsmanship of the Hakone region, with its geometric yosegi marquetry executed from contrasting woods and mother-of-pearl (raden) inlays in a black lacquered panel.
It comprises nine drawers of varying sizes (including two larger ones), all marked with a hand-engraved “X“ assembly symbol, characteristic of traditional Japanese workshops. The largest drawer is marked with two identical symbols, probably indicating a particular assembly or “master“ drawer.
The upper compartment opens with a hinged lid to reveal a lacquered interior decorated with mother-of-pearl floral motifs, suggesting its use for storing delicate objects or writing utensils.
The marquetry motifs feature traditional Japanese designs (asanoha, kikko, trompe-l'oeil cubes), beautifully realized in natural wood. Original brass handles and fittings.
Condition:
Very good overall condition with light age-related wear.
Marquetry and inlays well preserved
Original fittings and handles, stable structure
Craftsman's marks on each drawer (including double marks on the largest)
key missing
