This beautiful marble head of the goddess Minerva, dating from the 2nd century A.D., would be an outstanding example of classical Roman art and sculpture. Minerva, the goddess of wisdom, strategic warfare, arts and crafts, is often depicted with symbolic attributes that distinguish her from other deities. Minerva is usually depicted wearing a Corinthian helmet, often adorned with a crest or feather, a symbol of both war and wisdom. It is possible that this head shows Minerva with a helmet, although in some sculptures she may be depicted without one, in a more intimate or contemplative style. Height: 12 cm without base. Conservation: good condition for the period, without restoration. Provenance: Former English collection formed in the 1950s. Certified authentic and of the period by the expert.
