Juroku translation is 16 the age of Tairano Atsumori when a Gengi fighter died on the battlefield. The Heike Monogatori specifies that he died at 17. In the play Atsumori we see a priest returning to the beach at Ishinotani near Kobe. He remembers when he was an officer under the name Kumagai seeing the bloodied body of the young man and noticing that he had brought his flute. A revulsion towards war and pointless death took hold of him. Now a priest, he returned to the scene to pray with his companions. In the midst of his prayers, he was interrupted by the singing of a flute, the ghost of Atsumori, who immediately disappeared. Juroku has been sculpted in two different ways, defining the characteristics of an upper-class young man: some have round pupils, most have smooth cheeks and square pupils. The face is surrounded by horizontal strands of hair on the sides. His face is smooth, the pupils are square, the eyelids are grooved and the lips are those of a young girl. The second model is similar to Ko Omote, the eyebrows are very high at the beginning of the Edo period, the actors started wearing Ko Omote masks to represent Atsumori but adding a headband. The first model is more mature, the second more juvenile, the nose and mouth have a Ko Omote influence and a cream complexion shows his juvenile and high-ranking appearance. This mask has a stamp by the artist Ujiharu Fukkakusa, but it is somewhat illegible and may have been affixed after the mask was made, so this signature will be disregarded. He has a brocade bag and a large box.
