Ex Belgian Guy Mercier collection.

The Dogon people are renowned in African tribal art for their myths and beliefs, which are deeply linked to their cosmogony. Numbering around 300,000, the Dogon live mainly in the Mopti region of Mali, notably in Bandiagara, Koro, Banka, near Douentza, as well as part of northern Burkina Faso, north-west of Ouahigouya.

The Dogon are famous for creating more than 80 types of mask, among which the Kanaga, Sirigé, Satimbé and Walu stand out. These masks are mainly used during funeral ceremonies by the circumcised initiates of Awa society. Some masks depict animals, reflecting the rich mythology of African Dogon art. The ‘nyama', the vital force of the mask, is activated by various rituals to release its full magical potential.

During Dama ceremonies, which mark the end of a period of mourning, the Dogon sculpt new masks, continuing to pass on their artistic and spiritual tradition.
