In central and southern Mali, this sculpture represents the Ciwara, a half-antelope, half-horse creature also known as the "fawn of the earth". For the Bambara, also known as the 'Bamana' and often referred to as 'unbelievers' by Muslims, this mythical figure is said to have taught mankind agriculture and provided the first cereal. The crest, attached to the top of the skull with a wicker hat held together with raffia ties, accompanied the dancers during the rituals of the tà²n, an association dedicated to agricultural work. These masks jumped across the fields to chase away the nyama, evil forces, detect dangers and flush out malevolent spirits that could steal the soul of cultivated plants and the vitality of their seeds.
