- THE ARTWORK: The alabaster and gilded bronze bust of Joan of Arc by Gustave Van Vaerenbergh is a precise and delicate representation of the historical figure. The sculpture captures Joan of Arc's nobility and determination with her gaze turned toward the horizon. Fine details of suggested armor enhance her aura of courage. The textures and facial expressions are finely sculpted in alabaster, while the gilded bronze adds warmth and radiance. This bust sensitively embodies Joan of Arc's heroic spirit in an artistic blend of alabaster and gilded bronze. - ARTIST'S BIOGRAPHY: Gustave Van Vaerenbergh, a Belgian artist, studied at the Ghent Academy of Fine Arts from 1888 to 1890. Coming from a modest background as the son of a cobbler, he expressed his art in commercial enterprises. Settling in Schaerbeek in 1902, he became a sculptor at A. Carli Frères, specializing in commercial statues. Van Vaerenbergh is known for his busts of young women, children, animals, and ivory chryselephantines, embodying the Art Nouveau style. - THE FOUNDER: A. Carli Frères, founded in the early 1900s in Schaerbeek, Belgium, by Antonio Carli, produced and edited statuettes and sculptures in plaster, terracotta, marble, and bronze. The company initially employed around 20 people, growing to about 100 employees at its peak, specializing in religious and decorative sculptures. Works were mass-produced with serial numbers, reflecting a prolific commercial activity. The varied sculptures, including those by renowned artists like Gustave Van Vaerenbergh, often showed subtle variations in reproduction, highlighting the company's significant commercial aspect.
