Biography:
An industrial designer and Czech professor, Jindrich Halabala has been a major advocate of modernist furniture made industrially in Czechoslovakia, greatly influencing the interior design of many Czech inter-war and post-war homes. Training at Prague School of Applied Arts under the supervision of Czech Modernist architect-designer Pavel Janák. After finishing his studies in 1926, Halabala briefly worked in Prague before being hired by Up Zavody (furniture factory in the Czech Republic) where he quickly became the director of development, a position he held until 1946. Thinking that a piece of furniture must be functional, modular, mobile and cheap, Halabala defends a mass production approach to furniture and is considered a pioneer in the furniture industry in Czechoslovakia.
Halabala's designs include the H-269 Lounge Chair (early 1930s), certainly one of the best-known Czech designs, recognizable by its outrageous and curved armrests, the H-370 Coffee Table (1930s) that resembles a spider and the adjustable H-70 Lounge Chair (1930s), to name a few. Like his Scandinavian contemporaries Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) and Bruno Mathsson (1907-1988), Halabala uses curved wood in most of his seating designs.
