Large ammonite fossil carved from a single piece of stone, 53 cm high.
Ammonites, or Ammonoidea, are a fossil subclass of cephalopod molluscs.
They appeared during the Devonian period and disappeared shortly after the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event, having existed for around 335 million years. They were characterised by a more or less coiled univalve shell, with only the last chamber occupied by the animal, the other chambers serving to control its buoyancy; the siphon connecting them is in an external (ventral) position, along the wall, whereas it is axial in nautiluses. Their fossil shells are excellent chronological markers. Their size ranges from a few millimetres to over 2 metres in diameter (Parapuzosia seppenradensis).
