“Rare Swiss or German Hunting Crossbow from the XVII? Century“.
Bone Inlaid Stock | Iron Sighting Raise | Superb Historic Craftsmanship
Superb hunting crossbow dating from the XVII? century, probably of Swiss or South German origin, representing the elegance and functionality of noble weapons of the modern era.
It features a hardwood stock (probably walnut) finely inlaid with engraved bone or antler plates, testifying to the refinement typical of pieces commissioned by the nobility. The forged steel bow (blade) is solidly bound with cord and sinew, guaranteeing excellent shooting power - probably cocked with a goat's foot lever or wheel jack.
It is fitted with an iron rear sight, a rare feature that underlines its use for precision shooting, whether for game hunting or sporting competitions. The nut-wheel (roller) trigger mechanism is still present, accompanied by a curved iron trigger elegantly wrapped in brass wire.
Key features:
Origin: Switzerland or southern Germany, circa 1650-1700.
Materials: Walnut stock, bone inlays, steel bow, hemp or sinew rope.
Mechanism: Nut wheel with iron trigger and sight frog.
Condition: Excellent for its age, with beautiful original patina and minor period wear.
Usage: Noble hunting.
Length 56 cm, width 50 cm.
