After classical studies, Michel de Gallard decided to give up medicine to devote himself to painting. In 1946, he set up his studio at La Ruche, a renowned place where artists such as Chagall, Soutine and Léger also worked. In 1948, along with artists such as Buffet, Minaux and Rebeyrolle, he took an active part in the Man as Witness manifesto initiated by Lorjou. This manifesto firmly opposed the rise of abstraction in the art world of the time. Drawing on Gruber's influence and emerging from the miserabilist movement just after the war, Gallard exhibited regularly between 1940 and 1960, notably at the Salon des Moins de Trente Ans and the Salon de la Jeune Peinture. For ten years, he was represented by Galerie Maurice Granier, but since 1971, Michel de Gallard has exhibited exclusively at Galerie de la Présidence.
