Composition Surrealist oil on isorel panel by Marcel Delmotte, dated 1969. This composition combines the depth of black with a range of colors. He gives importance to volume and nuances the chromatic range with subtlety. The style is reminiscent of Giorgio De Chirico, whose work was decisive for Delmotte. A realist painter in his early days, he was influenced by Expressionism and evolved towards a surrealist aesthetic with large compositions, lunar landscapes and futuristic architecture. In his post-war paintings, his humanist ideals are again reflected, this time against an informal, knife-worked background, from which the chaotic scenes inspired by his imagination stand out. In 1969, Delmotte presented a major exhibition: L'Humanité en marche. In 1971, a major retrospective of his work was held at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Charleroi (132 works from 1931 to 1971). The exhibition highlighted the exemplary career of this child of the Pays Noir. In 1976, the Isy Brachot gallery also organized a retrospective of his work.
