Unsigned "VP-Host" offset by Victor Vasarely in an aluminum frame.
Born in Pécs, Hungary, Victor Vasarely (real name Gyozo Vásárhelyi) initially intended to become a doctor, but left his studies after two years to pursue art. The Bauhaus fascinated him, and he studied in Budapest at the Mühely Academy (the Hungarian Bauhaus) from 1929 to 1930. His studies left an indelible mark on him, as he retained the importance of functionalism and discovered abstract art. He perfected his graphic skills and his mastery of trompe-l'œil.
Victor Vasarely plays with our perception of space: he creates two-dimensional images that seem to step out of their frames and come to life before our very eyes. His two favorite shapes are the square and the hexagon. In a way, Victore Vasarely took the concept of Kasimir Malevich's White Square on a White Background (1917) a step further, by setting it in motion. Colors and shapes are reduced, and the artist concentrates on the expression of movement (kinetic art).
