Original oil on canvas signed by Jacques Zimmermann and dated 1980. It is countersigned, named and dated on the reverse.
It is very colorful and decorative, totally in the lyrical abstraction that is his universe.
Format: 116 x 89 cm.
Jacques Zimmermann (Antwerp 1929 - Brussels 2024) began exhibiting in 1951 at the Saint-Laurent bookshop-gallery, where many young, innovative artists (Léopold Plomteux, Jo Delahaut, Jean Milo, Jacques Lacomblez, Marie Carlier, etc.) gathered. His trip to Africa (1955 - 1956) was to have a profound effect on his work, with the exuberant nature he discovered remaining a recurring source of inspiration.
In 1957, he joined the ‘Phases' movement, which adopted the ethics of surrealism.
From 1956 to 1994, he was appointed professor of composition and drawing at the Institut supérieur de Saint-Luc in Brussels.
It was around 1974 that abstraction gave way to a dreamlike figurative style dominated by ambiguous beings, half insects, half theatrical characters, barely emerging from their abstract origins. Alongside his painted works come works in felt-tip pen, large black and white drawings in which Jacques Zimmermann incorporates the influence of Albrecht Dürer's drawings.
He likes to explore a powerfully dreamlike world that lies at the crossroads between invented forms and imaginary landscapes. His paintings are composed of vegetal and mineral sensations, sometimes bathed in the glowing sun or the cold glow of the northern lights.
Works in the collections of : Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Mons, Crédit Communal de Bruxelles, Banque Bruxelles-Lambert, Belgian State, Musée royal de Mariemont, Province of Hainaut, Université libre de Bruxelles.
