Jean Dubois - biography:
Secondary school teacher, member of Artistes du Hainaut and Cercle Artistique et Littéraire de Charleroi. Co-founder of the "Art Concret en Hainaut" group. An abstract painter, he was one of Wallonia's defenders of constructed art, working mainly in oils and relief. After training at the industrial school in Jumet, he completed his training with M. Stiévenart and at the Académie de Nivelles. However, he considers himself self-taught.
He exhibited frequently in the Charleroi region, notably at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in 1972. Initially influenced by R. Heintz, Matisse and Léger, in the mid-sixties he embarked on the path of abstraction, culminating in a constructed art influenced by Dewasne, Herbin and the American minimalists. His wide-open painted surfaces combine with a formal, geometric language in which verticality takes center stage.
