Takesada Matsutani is a Japanese painter, printmaker and installation artist who has lived in France since 1966. Trained in Nihonga painting, Matsutani moved away from it as his work became more abstract. From 1979 onwards, Matsutani regularly designed installations that developed his formal preoccupations in space. The artist covers long strips of paper with graphite pencil strokes, breaking the regular rhythm only at the end of the surface, with the cooperation of white spirit. At other times, ink drips slowly from a pierced, suspended bag, gradually covering a cloth or paper underneath.
