René MELS was born in Herent in 1909. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Louvain and at La Cambre in Brussels. In 1950 he attended Hayter's workshop 17, Paris.
After a passage through figurative expressionism, he adopted abstract expressionism: large quadrangular collages of generous paintings, with hues which are variations of a single color. He died in Kraainem (outskirts of Brussels) in 1977. Bibliography: The dictionary of modern and contemporary plastic arts by Jean-Pierre Delarge published by GRÜND.
Exhibitions multiplied, especially abroad, after that of Young Belgian Painting in 1947. The Engraved Work of Locarno welcomed René Mels alongside Friedlaender, Clavé, Matta... Several retrospectives (1986, 1988, 1990) place this “authentic lord of art” (Stéphane Rey) in his rightful place among the most asserted “presences”. Bibliography: René Mels or the shoals by Philippe Roberts-Jones, Wim Toebosch, Fernand Verhesen, Paul-Emile Vincent.
