Samurai armour from the Edo period, known as Yoroi or Tosei Gusoku, was designed both to protect the warrior and to symbolise his rank and allegiance.

Unlike earlier periods marked by constant battles, the Edo era, under the Tokugawa regime, was a period of relative peace, which influenced the design of this armour, making it more ceremonial but still functional.
