Venus Anadyomene
Marble. Height: 14 cm
Roman art, 2nd century A.D.
Provenance: Numisart Ltd, Oxford, United Kingdom
This head of Venus was once part of a marble statue depicting the goddess rising from the sea, wringing out and arranging her hair. The sculpture is based on a Hellenistic prototype showing the goddess of love and beauty drying herself off after being born - as an adult - from the sea on the coast of Cyprus.
