Tribal Art ‘ Hopi Kachina doll ’ polychrome wood sculpture, Arizona 20th century
French collection.
The Katsinam (singular Kachina) sculptures, which embody the traditions of the Hopi Indian people of Arizona, come to life during the traditional dances celebrating the annual rain festivals. These wooden dolls, adorned with magnificent coloured surfaces, are true works of art and serve as educational tools for the Pueblo American Indian group, which includes the Hopi, Zuni, Tewa Village, Acoma Pueblo and Laguna Pueblo. At the end of the ritual festivities, they are offered to the children. Representing a wide variety of spirits, these statuettes also symbolise the Kachina dancers, with each colour evoking the points of the compass.
