Otto Lessing (1846-1912) was a renowned German sculptor and architect. Born in Munich, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in his native city. The son and grandson of sculptors, he continued the family tradition by becoming involved in decorative and monumental sculpture projects. Lessing is best known for his work on public buildings in Berlin, notably the dome of the Reichstag and the decoration of the Berlin Opera House. He was also a professor at the Berlin Academy of Art, influencing a generation of sculptors. Lessing was a key figure in the integration of sculpture into neoclassical and historicist architecture in Germany.
