Magic Box desk, Swiss edition by Mummenthaler & Meier, circa 1955
Here's a magnificent example of functional and practical design. This is the famous trunk desk designed by the Swiss publisher Mummenthaler & Meir in 1928. It was originally a piece of office furniture designed for officers in the Swiss army when they were away on business. They could easily carry all their documents under lock and key in this trunk, which could easily be transformed into an ergonomic workstation whenever they needed it. This practical piece of furniture was marketed to the general public around 1950. It was given the well-deserved nickname of the "Magic Box". It was also made in identical form under licence by the Parisian publisher Genestar after 1955. The piece presented for sale is in a remarkable state of preservation, both aesthetically and functionally. The interior appears to have never been used, as it is in impeccable, practically new condition. It has all its original accessories: sliding lamp, drawer with its period key, all the teak shelves that can be adjusted as required, folding worktop, etc. The exterior is made of cherry wood, which is rather rare for this model. It has simply been varnished with "Osmo" satin-finish hard oil, which is extremely resistant to wear and tear. The keys to secure the desk when closed are still present. This is an opportunity to acquire a design icon that is both elegant and enduringly practical thanks to its exceptional modularity, all in near-new condition despite being almost 75 years old!
