German Impressionist Franz Hienl-Merre was born in Mainz in 1869, but lived most of his life in Munich, in southern Germany. It was from here that he painted impressionistically German Alpine landscapes, Lake Tegernsee and forest views, but also the city with its nightlife, fair and beach life. The painter was also particularly adept at painting horses in motion, such as those involved in horse racing, polo and trotting.
