Biography:
Jean Gerbino (Sicily 1876 - France 1960) was a French master ceramist based in Vallauris. Born into a family of Sicilian potters, he began working in a nearby factory at the age of ten. In 1902, he arrived in France and worked as a potter for the Massier family in Vallauris. In 1905, in Algeria, he set up his own workshop in Maison Carrée (Algiers's 18th arrondissement). He then returned to France to work for Pichon in Uzès. He returned to Vallauris in 1919. There he worked, among others, for the Massier family.

He then began research into a very special and original mosaic process for his ceramics, which took him around fifteen years of work before he finally perfected his "terres mosaïquées".
In 1930, he set up as a craftsman to exploit his idea and won the Grand Prix de Paris in 1931 (29th Concours Lépine). He regularly won awards at the many exhibitions he took part in until his death in 1966.
His son Jean Antonin worked in the company until his death in 1944.
From 1943 to 1953, the artist worked with his son-in-law Ange Joseph Capra, who created fine decorations in shades of blue and green. Jean Gerbino then trained his second son-in-law Édouard Alziary, who worked alongside him and ran the factory from 1957 until 31 December 1974.
Yvan Koenig, Édouard's son-in-law, succeeded him in 1975 and remained the owner until the company closed in 2003.
In 2005, Muriel Koenig, Yvan's daughter and great-granddaughter of Jean Gerbino, opened her own workshop in Vallauris, continuing the tradition for the 4th generation by renewing the shapes and decorations.
