This 19th-century Dan mask from Côte d'Ivoire is typical of the Dan culture, an ethnic group from western Côte d'Ivoire and eastern Liberia. Dan masks play a central role in the cultural, religious and social life of this ethnic group.
They are used for various ceremonies, including initiations, ritual dances and rites of passage. Each mask has a specific meaning and use.
