African tribal art - Songye statue
Belgian private collection.
These protective objects, used to secure homes, are among the most sought-after in Africa. The Nkisi acts as a mediator between deities and human beings. Larger sculptures are kept collectively by villages, while smaller ones belong to an individual or a family. In the 16th century, the Songyes left the Shaba region to settle on the left bank of the Lualaba. Their society is organized along patriarchal lines. Their history is closely linked to that of the Luba, with whom they share common ancestors.
